WASHINGTON — Chinese President Xi Jinping began a state visit to the United States on 23 September for high-level talks with US President Donald Trump.
The three-day visit is the first US state visit by a Chinese leader in more than a decade and follows reciprocal presidential meetings within a six-month period.
Trump was expected to greet Xi at Joint Base Andrews before formal ceremonies, closed-door discussions and a state dinner at the White House.
The agenda includes tariffs, rare-earth supplies, export controls, synthetic-drug precursors and the intense competition between the two countries in artificial intelligence.
Officials and analysts also expect the leaders to discuss Taiwan, regional security and mechanisms for managing disputes without allowing them to escalate into crisis.
China’s Foreign Ministry said Beijing wants stronger dialogue, better management of differences and cooperation on issues affecting global peace and development.
The meetings will test whether the world’s two largest economies can stabilise relations while continuing to compete across trade, technology and military power.
