COPENHAGEN — General Carsten Breuer, Germany’s chief of defence, has been elected to become the next chair of NATO’s Military Committee, the alliance’s highest military authority.

The chiefs of defence from NATO’s 32 member states selected Breuer during a meeting in Copenhagen, according to reports published on 19 September.

He is scheduled to succeed Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone in the summer of 2027 and will serve as NATO’s senior military adviser to the North Atlantic Council.

Breuer has served in the German armed forces since 1984, trained in Germany and the United States, and participated in NATO operations in Afghanistan.

His selection comes as European allies increase defence expenditure and prepare for greater responsibility amid Russia’s continuing war against Ukraine.

Germany plans major long-term military investment, while NATO is strengthening readiness, deterrence and coordination across its eastern flank.

The appointment places a German officer at the centre of alliance military planning during a period of rapid strategic change and heightened Euro-Atlantic security concerns.
